"Thrilling and compelling…required viewing"

/ The Hollywood Reporter

Winner of the SXSW Audience Award

“By turns pulse-quickening and contemplative, "The Crash Reel" is a thoroughly winning docu portrait of former pro snowboarder Kevin Pearce, whose 2009 accident while training for the Winter Olympics left him with a traumatic brain injury -- and a feverish desire to return to the slopes ASAP.”

/ Variety

“Director Lucy Walker (“Waste Land”) pulls off a spectacular feat of her own, balancing the needs of extreme sports vid and cautionary tale.”

/ Variety

“Walker's look at once-and-future-star Kevin Pearce transcends being a mere cautionary tale about the price of extreme sports and becomes a film both morally grand and heart-wrenchingly intimate.”

/ Variety

“Lucy Walker asks pointed questions about hazard, reward and consequence in her bracing new film about extreme-sports up-and-comer Kevin Pearce."

/ The Los Angeles Times

This eye-popping film, stunningly edited from 20 years of verité footage, follows champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce and exposes the fatal allure of extreme sports. An escalating rivalry between Kevin and his nemesis Shaun White in the run-up to the 2010 Olympics culminates in Shaun winning Gold and Kevin in a coma following a training accident. Kevin's family help him rebuild his life as a brain injury survivor, but when he insists he wants to return to the sport he loves his eloquent brother David, who has Down syndrome, intervenes. As an elite athlete, Kevin was a professional risk-taker but now his skills are impaired and a small blow to the head will kill him. How much risk is too much?
